What's Up - August 2015

Comet C/2014 Q1 PANSTARRS is putting on a good show in the west just after dark at the moment. A couple of weeks ago it was close to the crescent Moon and has also had a close encounter with Venus. It is now above and slightly to the left of Venus. Use a current finder chart for a precise location. Best spotted in binoculars, cameras or small telescopes.
Mercury returns to the western evening sky this month and will join Venus and Jupiter before the pair go into solar conjunction at the end of the month. Saturn is in Libra and is high in the northern sky at the start of the night. Uranus rises late evening in Pisces and Neptune rises in the east just after dusk and is at opposition on the 1st of September.
